Happy 50th Fat Friday! This is now one of favourite recipes and its such a unique way of making a brownie. The bottom layer is a peanut crumble layer, the middle is a layer of oreos and top layer is a chocolate brownie layer. Its worth the extra effort and can be served, with some clotted cream, as a dessert too.

Penny Reviews: Tearooms-Vernon Cottage
Oh I do love a good tearoom. Especially when its on a bright and sunny afternoon. My family and I went to Vernon Cottage located in Shanklin on the Isle of Wight. I've been to this tearoom many times and have always had a good experiences with the food.
You find your table and make a note of the table number and order at the bar area inside the cottage. I was meeting up with some friends and they had ordered already, so I went straight to the bar to order a cake and a cup of tea.
As I approached the staff member behind the counter, he was polite to begin with but that changed when I wasn't sure of the table number. He rolled his eyes and tutted at me and told me to point to the table were I was sat. I did so and was a little taken back. "Table 38 then? So what do you want?" I was a little shocked at the change in behaviour, and answered just as rudely with "lemon cake and apple crunch tea, please." We exchanged money and I sat back down with my friends and explained what had happened. They agreed with me, that he was rude.
When the cake came over by another member of staff, who was very polite. The cake was light, fluffy and really lemony and the buttercream was the just the right amount. It was a beautiful sponge with a tangy buttercream that I would definitely recommend.
When the waiter gave me my tea and cake, my friend ordered a
coffee in a cup rather then a mug. He said that its only one size as the coffee is from a machine. She said that should be fine. The rude staff member brought over the coffee with the receipt. Awkward to say the less, he mentioned the 'cup' situation and again shrugged it off and said "Its a machine, so yeah, nothing I can do." and simply walked off.
Overall, I would come in for the nicer staff members and the delicious pastries and cakes but this time, the rude member of staff really made the experience uncomfortable. There were other members of staff who were pretty nice, so it could be a one off.

Fat Friday #47 Cookie Dough Cupcakes
Oh yeah! Cookie dough! One of my guilty pleasures. I never eat cake batter or biscuit doughs as I want to eat the baked product. But cookie dough is another thing, if there isn't enough to make a full cookie, I will eat it. When I saw this recipe for cookie dough inside a cupcake, it was definitely one for a Fat Friday. Although, you'll need to start the day before to make the cookie dough so they have enough time to freeze.

Penny Reviews Tearooms: Tenth Hole Tearoom
After a number of years studying in Portsmouth, I've never had the chance to make the long walk to the Tenth Hole Tearoom, just Friday was the exception. Both Rob and I had the rare chance of a day off, at the same time, to go out on a date. It's so rare that we have days off that we were stuck on what to do, so a nice walk on the beach and a trip to a well known tearoom was the answer.
The tearoom that doubles as a golf course was nothing special to look at from the outside. It's really unassuming, but as we both ventured further inside, the pastel blue décor was calming dispute the busy interior. Beautifully decorated, well presented and clean. This was first impressions I gathered from the small establishment.
We were lucky enough to nab a table, it was so busy and after trying the cakes we can see why! When ordering, I thought at two cakes and drinks I thought £13 was really expensive, after I saw the portion size, I change my mind. Tenth Hole are not stingy with the sizing of their portions! I ordered a Rocky Road which was full of digestive, chocolate and marshmallows. I like cherries in my Rocky Road, but I'll overlook it because it was massive. I ordered a Toffee Apple latte, which was as expected. I enjoyed it but it could be regarded as a little over sweet, but I ordered it for something a little different.
Rob on the other hand had a mint brownie with a brownie hot chocolate. Again the portion size was very generous, the hot chocolate with super chocolaty with a hearty amount of whipped cream and brownie sprinkles. The mint brownie, was not really a brownie however more of a cake-like consistency, but still tasty and full of strong mint flavours.
I didn't get lots of interaction with the staff but they all seemed friendly and well spoken.
Overall, I would definitely recommend a visit if you want a good cakes, great atmosphere, with a lovely surrounding area and a spot of golf, as an extra bonus.

The Cake and Bake Show Haul 2015
Well I've had fun! Stuffing my face with cake and free samples. Did any of you readers get the chance to visit the Cake and Bake Show in London this year? My friend Lucy and I are making this an annual 'thing' (You can read last years post here). I was hoping that I would do a video on it... until my camera broke.
Thats right. On the one day of filming I REALLY needed a good camera... erg. Tech. Such is life. I thought I would do a blog post on what I purchased.
Firstly, food because... food. I grabbed some Emily Apple and Banana Fruit crisps. But these are the best crisps I've ever had. They were just soft enough in texture not to be soggy but crisp enough to crunch on and not break your teeth. The flavours are true fruit flavours. Seriously, totally worth buying!
I got a super weird gizmo. Its a peeler. BUT NOT JUST A PEELER! Its a julienne vegetable and fruit peeler with a cool attachment to make noodles from veg. Lucy was full on impressed with this, that she didn't hesitate in buying it. I was convinced to get one also and the peeler does assist me in daily cooking tasks.
I also got a new piping bag and nozzles... pretty standard.
For my Halloween bakes this year, I got some pretty sprinkles and cupcake cases from one of my personal favourite places to shop, Scrumptious. I bought some green, purple and orange sprinkles as well as some jazzy violet sprinkles. They have a great selection of sprinkles, decorating materials and cases. I did get some adorable ghostly cupcake cases as well as some Christmasy ones (don't judge me I know its only October).
To stuff my face with, I got marshmallows from both 'The Marshmallowist' and 'The Marshmallow Company'. From the Marshmallowist, I got strawberry and basil, blueberry and gin, lemon and coconut flavours. Now, I must be truthful, the flavours didn't really come through apart from the coconut. I haven't tried 'The Marhmallow Company' marshmallows yet but I will do and will add what I think here.
I did get some special icing sugars, like I do every year, from another one of my favourite companies: Sugar and Crumbs. I bought: 'Santa's Snowball' which tastes like white chocolate and marshmallows (yum!!), 'Christmas Punch' which tastes like mulled wine and lastly, 'Apple Crumble'... which is what you expect. They make great buttercreams, or as a substitute for caster sugar in cakes.

News and a New Video!
It's been a long time since I've posted anything on the blog. I've been busy working on something big.... I've started a new business with my friend! Its a cake business that specialises in different pastries and sweets. Its named The Pastry Girls. We're still working the website and the logo but will keep you posted as we go. But for more up to date news on events etc, you can check our facebook, twitter, Youtube or instagram.
In other news, I have uploaded a new video to Cupcakes, Cake and Passion Youtube channel. Its video of me building my large sakura tree project I needed to go for college. It took ages to build, but the video is less than 4 minutes long. So give it a watch if you fancy it.

Fat Friday #38 Funfetti Cake
I wasn't really sure what a funfetti cake was, until google helped out. Its a cute confetti style cake, its super colourful and bright and makes an excellent cake. Rob asked me to whip one up for his architect studio for the end of term meeting. My suggestion is to use the large confetti dots as they won't bleed into the cake batter. Decorate with lots more confetti dots for the full rainbow effect.
Cake Ingredients (Recipe adapted from Saved by Cake by Marian Keyes) :
- 8 eggs
- 400g sugar
- 400g unsalted butter
- 3 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 600g self raising flour
- A small amount of jam (we used blackberry jam to cut across the sweetness of the buttercream)
Equipment:
- 8cm Cake tins x 3
- Wire rack
- Bowl
- Wooden spoon/ Handheld whisk
- Sieve
- Turntable
- Serrated knife
- Cake board
- Cranked pallet knife
Buttercream:
- 30g Confetti sprinkles to decorate
1.Butter and line three 8cm tins. Pre-heat the oven to 190c/375f/Gas Mark 5.
2.Cream the butter and sugar together until pale and fluffy. Add the eggs, one by one, beating between each addition. The mix may curdle a little but add a tablespoon of flour if this happens.
3.Stir in the vanilla extract and sieve in the flour and fold through. Add the confetti and fold again.
4.Divide the mix between the 3 tins and bake for 20 minutes or until golden and well risen.
5. Place the cakes on a wire rack to cool for 5 minutes before removing from the tin to cool completely.
6. In theory, you should have some amazing crazy colour bits in your cake!
To assemble:
1. Level all the cakes off with a knife and mentally work out which cake you would like to assemble.
2. Place a little buttercream on a cake board and place the bottom tier of the cake on top of the buttercream to hold in place.
3. Spread a little jam on the top of the bottom tier and follow with the buttercream.
4. Place the next cake layer on top and repeat the last step.
5. Place the last layer on top and make sure its stacked straight.
6. Crumb coat the whole cake with the vanilla buttercream and place in the fridge for 15 minutes.
7. Using the turntable, coat the whole cake in a layer of buttercream. Then carefully sprinkle the confetti halfway up the cake or decorate like a crazy rainbow!
Have an excellent weekend!!!
